An Efficient Method of Self-Generated Assistance Data for Fast-Fix Applications

Abstract: In this paper, we will introduce a practical solution with integrating many advanced features, including AlwaysLocate (TM), EASY (TM), HotStill (TM), and EPO (TM),which are called as SElf-Generated Assistance-data (SEGA) technologies into high sensitivity & low power GNSS chipsets. SEGA’s capabilities are expanded to more general applications like the snapshot-fixing systems, trigger start services, and many LBS requirements. Practically, SEGA can be adopted on GNSS-capable mobile devices to perform a fast time-to-first-fix without network connection. In previous work [1], the fundamentals of the SEGA method were described and all subsystems were also discussed in detail. The algorithm’s performance was quantified in TTFF and sensitivity experiments on a GNSS-capable phone. The experimental result has proven that the SEGA technology can significantly help the sensitivity and provide AGPS-like TTFF performance without an AGPS connection. The satellite signal acquisition sensitivity will be improved to -160dBm and power consumption is only 3 mW in average. Having this system, end users can obtain accurate “always-on position” with minimal power consumption. These new technologies will accelerate the realization of positioning everywhere and help us communicate in a seamless fashion.
