Performance Bounds of RSSI-based Wi-Fi Positioning Under Different Estimation Scenarios

Mohamed Mansour, Deric Waters, and Tarkesh Pande

Abstract: We derive a new formula for describing the dilution of precision of indoor Wi-Fi positioning based on signal strength in a controlled environment. We call this metric Wi-Fi dilution of precision (WDOP). It provides a complete description of the wireless channel as well as the access point geometry. We also derive the performance bounds of RSSI-based Wi-Fi indoor positioning using the log-normal shadowing model which is directly related to the WDOP. We show different variations of the Cramer-Rao bound of the position estimation based on the knowledge of the channel parameters.
