Abstract: We present a centimeter-class augmentation system utilizing the Quasi-Zenith Satellite System (QZSS). The QZSS is a Japanese satellite navigation system that broadcasts GPS interoperable signals and GPS augmentation signals from an inclined, elliptical geosynchronous orbit. Users around Japan and Oceania can make use of seamless positioning, navigation and timing services even in urban canyons and mountainous areas. As one of the augmentation signals, centimeter-class augmentation information for the main islands of Japan and its surrounding ocean area is allocated to a Japanese original experimental signal (LEX signal: 1278.75MHz) and broadcasted. The centimeter-class augmentation system estimates the individual GPS error components using the undifferenced observables by a State Space Model (SSM) and generates a State Space Representation (SSR) that is a functional and stochastic description of the state. The SSR is compressed to less than 2kbps (1695bps) to transmit as the augmentation information to users through the LEX signal. Users correct their observables with corrections calculated from the augmentation information, and perform RTK operations with the corrected observables. We carried out the stationary and mobile positioning experiments by using the augmentation information, broadcasted using the LEX signal of the first Quasi-Zenith Satellite (QZS), ‘MICHIBIKI’. The results show that the real time accuracy is less than 3cm (drms) in the horizontal direction and 6 cm (rms) in the vertical direction and Time to First Fix (TTFF) is 35 seconds.
