NIMA Sails Forward With On-Line Digital Navigational Safety Data: Accessing Maritime Safety Information the Easy Way

Steven C. Hall and Patrick V. Dorr

Abstract: The National Imagery and Mapping Agency (or it’s predecessors) began purchasing and distributing navigational safety information in 1830. Services steadily improved with technology over the years from adding radio broadcast warnings in 1907 to bulletin board services in 1985 to the worldwide web in 1999. This paper discusses the evolution of those products and services with emphasis on the benefits of the Worldwide Web to assist mariners at sea with Safety of Navigation information by an illustrative emergency diversion scenario.
