Long Term and Multi-Receiver GPS/GIOVE Mixed PVT Experimentation

Abstract: In order to combine measurements from different satellite systems, the biases between the different system times shall be broadcast, or determined at the user level as additional unknowns. Actually, with current GALILEO prototype satellites, i.e. GIOVE-A and GIOVE-B, combination with GPS can already be done and was presented in [7]. This experimentation has been largely improved, and is now done on a continuous basis for some reference receivers, including worldwide receivers of the GIOVE operational system. GPS/GIOVE mixed PVTs have also been calculated for commercial receivers, with dual frequency or single frequency receivers, for open and constrained environments (Urban…), and for static or dynamic points. Different key signal combinations have been assessed in various positioning configurations : GPS/GIOVE single frequency L1, GPS L1/L2 and GIOVE L1/E5… This article briefly reviews theoretical approach and focuses on practical results including KPI like 95% accuracy, over long periods. GPS/GIOVE PVTs can be continuously processed thanks to an agreement between CNES and ESA, with an access to ESA receivers measurements and GIOVE navigation messages calculated on ground before the uplink. PVTs can also be computed for short periods using real navigation messages from GIOVE satellites. Results are that there are large periods with good measurements from GIOVE satellites, in fact from the global GIOVE system, with pseudo-ranges residuals of a few meters or less. GPS/GIOVE mixed PVT positioning accuracies are near the specified 4 meters for Galileo alone. Inter-operability of GPS and GIOVE is assessed in such mixed PVTs, which is good news for coming GALILEO.
