Adapting an Open-Loop MEMS Accelerometer for Gun-Launched Navigation

John Cole, Andrew Cunningham and Jason Tauscher

Abstract: Silicon Designs has developed and is producing MEMS accelerometers for a wide range of instrumentation applications. In this paper we describe tests performed and the performance achieved for possible use in gun-hard, tactical navigation applications. The design of this accelerometer is described. Initial tests for gun hardness were conducted by two IMU manufacturers, leading to changes in design and fabrication. Bias repeatability tests identified problem areas that are being addressed with a new prototype. Performance parameters are discussed for both the instrumentation-grade and new prototype units.
