Abstract: | Because of occurrence of multipath propagation of GPS signals in various complex environments, GPS receiver will be disturbed and then lose its positioning accuracy. Thereby multipath signals are always considered as an error source of positioning by GPS. However, in this paper we propose an arrayed GPS antenna wave measurement system to take advantage of the phenomenon of multipath propagation of GPS signals reflected from sea surface to gain the characteristics of ocean wave accurately. In this paper we propose a new local remote-sensing method by GPS, which is implemented with arrayed GPS antenna and GPS software receiver, and utilized in some basic experiments to acquire ocean wave data and analyze its characteristics. The new local remote-sensing method by GPS takes advantage of the phenomenon of multipath propagation of GPS signal reflected from sea surface to measure ocean wave information accurately. In order to confirm to be able to receive reflection signal effectively, we carried out receiving test of our designed arrayed GPS antenna. They are two kinds of basic evaluation tests. First test is that the arrayed GPS antenna was installed on two places of the campus of Kobe University. Depression angle of the arrayed GPS antenna was 60 degrees in both tests. These evaluation tests were basic receiving experiments because there was no periodic wave. Second test is that the arrayed GPS antenna was installed on seaside of Awajishima Island. Depression angle was 20 degrees in this test. Mirror specular reflection signal could be received effectively because the arrayed GPS antenna is consisted of LHCP antenna. These signals include much multipath signal in tested conditions, but it could not separate other multipath signal on correlator output by software GPS receiver. It is considered that other multipath signal are weak compared with the mirror specular reflection signal, and it needs to improve signal-to-noise ratio when experiments of measuring ocean wave will try again in near future. |
