Abstract: This contribution provides an in-depth demonstration of a geometry-free approach to estimate stochastic properties of GPS and GIOVE pseudorange and carrier phase observables based on short and zero baseline measurements. The results clearly show a pseudorange precision improvement with the GIOVE E1B signal compared to the GPS L1C/A signal, as well as a precision improvement of the GPS L5Q and GIOVE E5aQ signal with respect to the L1/E1 signals under real operational conditions. However, strong multipath effects were found on the new signals, which might prevent advantageous use of the improved precision. Finally, the feasibility of integer carrier phase cycle ambiguity resolution in the absence of precise ephemerides is demonstrated, indicating GPS-Galileo inter-operability.
