Abstract: | This paper presents mathematical formulations of the dilution of precision (DOP) metric for use in satellitebased search and rescue systems such as Cospas-Sarsat, and specifically for its planned medium Earth orbit (MEO) enhancement. The DOP formulations are given for two geolocation techniques, time difference of arrival (TDOA) and frequency difference of arrival (FDOA), as well as their combination. We also describe a software tool which implements these DOP formulations for analysis of the geometric impact of satellite constellations on geolocation estimation accuracy. |
