Abstract: | In March, 2007, the GPS Wing placed Lockheed Martin on contract to develop a demonstration payload transmitting on the L5 (1176.45 MHz) frequency and to integrate this “L5 Demo” payload onto a Block IIR-M satellite. The L5 Demo payload will help ensure that the GPS frequency filing in the L5 band with the International Telecommunication Union Radiocommunication Sector (ITU-R) will be preserved for the operational L5 signals to follow on GPS Block IIF, Block III and later spacecraft. The L5 Demo payload will also enable testing of receiver equipment with a live L5 signal from a GPS satellite. This paper describes the requirements, hardware design, test and operational aspects of the L5 Demo payload. |
