Abstract: | With the advent of Galileo and other GNSS to come or to become completed the number of available satellites will grow significantly. This will be beneficial for challenging applications like indoor positioning. This paper deals with a field test in which the true Galileo signal was transmitted from a signal generator mounted on a helicopter. The receiving environment, a residential building, was equipped with a voltmeter and a spectrum analyzer in order to sample the signal power level and the signal spectra. All relevant processing steps comprising the measurement setup, the data conditioning and the formulation of a model approach will be presented. In particular, for the signal spectra suitable metrics to quantify the distortions had to be developed. The collected data will be evaluated to find interrelationships with respect to the relative geometrical locations of the transmitter and the receiver, the properties of and at the boundary layer between indoor and outdoor, and the geometrical parameters of the indoor environment. The interrelationships were captured by defining appropriate influencing variables. A major outcome is that these variables differ for the two measured quantities. Whereas simple relationships between geometrical conditions and the signal power level and, hence, the corresponding influence variables, can easily be found, the relationship between the geometrical conditions and the signal spectra is far more complex. Nevertheless, an approach of combining probable influence variables with a closed rule system capable of describing the extent of signal distortion will be shown. For the near future, the gathered insights how the signal is affected may be helpful to develop simulation tools for indoor purposes |
