A New GPS-Enhanced High Resolution Weather Service

Tetsuya Iwabuchi, Christian Rocken

Abstract: We have developed a high resolution weather service using true and semi real-time GPS tropospheric estimates. The service now covers three forecast domains of (1) the continental United Sates (CONUS), (2) eastern Asia, and (3) Europe, where relatively dense GPS networks are available. The temporal and spatial resolution of the forecast is 30 minutes and 12 km grid. The product of the weather service is more than three-day forecasts of precipitation, temperature, surface pressure, and wind. Zenith tropospheric delay and zenith wet delay forecasts are also available for the correction purpose of tropospheric delay for surveying as one of the products. This new weather service can be provided for any locations within the three forecast domains. A user can select any forecast locations in metropolitan area, remote backcountry location, or even over the ocean. Potential users' locations may be construction sites, resorts, back country camp areas, sailing areas, beaches, back-country ski areas, and agricultural areas etc. Users can obtain a detailed GPS-enhanced forecast for this location for planning their activities. The current forecasts are available at http://clickforweather.com . This paper summarizes the system and features of the new GPS enhanced high resolution weather service and propose potential application of the system.
