DOP Relationship between the TOA and the TDOA Positioning

Abstract: This paper presents position error characteristics and relationship of DOP between TOA and TDOA. DOP for TDOA is defined using the error covariance matrix of TDOA to describe the positioning error. It is analytically shown that the error ellipse (ellipsoid) of TOA has the same magnitudes and orientations as TDOA, which means that TOA has the same position estimates, error ellipse (or ellipsoid), and DOP as TDOA. By numerical examples and computer simulations, the positioning performance of two methods is compared, and our assertion is verified.
