Abstract: | Despite of the volume and weight advantages of the micro-machined electromechanical system (MEMS) inertial navigation system (INS), potential large noise, calibration bias and system drift of these INS sensors could significantly degrade the positioning performance and restrict their applications. In order to improve the positioning performance, corrections are always required from alternative positioning techniques. One of the preferred techniques to correct the INS positioning errors in the environments of GPS outage is radio frequency identification (RFID) positioning technique. In this paper, the error sources of the 2D MEMS INS are investigated. Two correction parameters, including offset correction and scaling correction, are introduced to correct the INS positioning results. A novel RFID-assisted scaling correction algorithm is introduced to determine the scaling correction parameters of the INS. The RFID deterministic cell of origin (CoO) and probabilistic CoO assisted algorithms are developed to improve the positioning accuracy. An RFID-assisted 2D MEMS INS positioning system has been built to implement the algorithms developed. Field experiments were conducted in Yarra Bend Park, Melbourne, Australia. Trimble R8 RTK system was used as a positioning reference to evaluate those new algorithms developed. Results show that the RFID-assisted 2D MEMS INS positioning algorithms can provide continuous positioning results and reduce the positioning error from 1300 meters using the INS alone to 10-30 meters. Compared with the RFID deterministic CoO assisted algorithm, the probabilistic CoO assisted algorithm involves more information of the received signal strength (RSS) measurements, produces a more flexible cell size, reduces the possibility of missing cells and improves the positioning performance. |
