Loran-C Integrated with Satellite Systems NELS Status Report

Terje H. Jorgensen and Gunn Marit Hernes

Abstract: The paper is a presentation of current and future activities integrating Loran-C with satellite navigation systems. It contains some reflections on potential future developments towards a Trans-European combined satellite/ terrestrial radionavigation system, and some key challenges in this respect. NELS system status regarding operation and further development of the system is presented in the paper. Implementation of Eurofix in NELS is ongoing and DGPS corrections are expected to be transmitted from four Loran-C stations from 6 July, 2000. The paper presents preliminary conclusions from a measurement program where the impact of Eurofix on the Loran-C navigation signal and Time Of Emission (TOE) control was evaluated. By implementing Eurofix in NELS the NELS user will have three important advantages: • Differential GNSS service through Loran-C • Improved availability and continuity by using calibrated Loran-C • External integrity A Loran-C/Eurofix/EGNOS/ Test & Validation Program, partly funded by EU, has started. A short presentation of the program will be given.
