LANDING: Added Assistance to Pilots on Small Aircraft Provided by EGNOS

Joao Oliveira and Christian Tiberius

Abstract: This contribution provides a showcase of what can be done in terms of positioning quality (accuracy and integrity) with a low cost single-frequency GPS+EGNOS receiver combined with sophisticated real-time data processing in static and dynamic environments. System integrity is monitored by Protection Levels and augmented by External Reliability Levels. For the LANDING project a working prototype has been implemented based on the new Septentrio AsteRx1 single-frequency GNSS+SBAS receiver board. The paper shows SBAS positioning results with EGNOS based on actual data, including a flight test, and how position quality is monitored in real-time. Integrity requirements for Precision Approach can be met (for APV-I), considering both horizontal and vertical position; CAT-I integrity can, at present, be achieved only for a few percent of the time.
