Shipboard Weather Routing

Jac. A. Spaans and Peter Stoter

Abstract: In 1994, the authors presented a paper at the IAIN congress in Beijing, where they introduced the Ship Performance Optimisation System (SPOS) as a new development in ship weather routingi. At that time, only few on board trials had been performed. Nowadays, about 75 ships are equipped with SPOS and several trials have been performed in order to demonstrate the effectiveness of the system and to adapt the user interface for maximum ease. The paper presents the outline of the SPOS system as it is operational now, and presents the results of trials performed on the North Atlantic route.
