Abstract: | The US Coast Guard is working hard to determine future requirements for its navigation services. Expected increases in maritime commerce will stress our existing marine transportation system in the foreseeable future. Through information technology, the Coast Guard hopes to achieve improved efficiencies and enhance safety in our busy ports and waterways. Information technology will impact all our waterway users in different ways. Recreational boaters need different information than commercial vessels. Information technology must be managed to prevent the navigator from being overloaded with inconsequential data and focus on the information and guidance each vessel needs to safely transit or enjoy the waterway. This paper will present the USCG Intelligent Waterways Information System research and development program. We finally present the concept of the US Coast Guard Maritime Information Hub that may serve as a model for providing mariners with vital information in the future. |
