Modern Generic IMU Interface Standard

Steven L. Saks, James L. Farrell, Frank van Graas and John Stevenson

Abstract: The aim of this document is to define the information needed to support an Open System Architecture interface for flexible usage of Inertial Measuring Unit (IMU) equipments in a large and ever-expanding scope of applications. Definition of information will include the requisite functional content, messagepackaging format, timeliness, and precision. The intended outcome is an interface supporting data transmission from any IMU -- or simulated IMU -- to any other system, subsystem, or simulator. IMU interface functional definition and the IMU-to-INS processor data transmission protocol are presented. Message protocols, electrical circuit characteristics, and logic levels are also addressed herein.
