Abstract: Japanese geostationary satellite, which was launched on December 2006 for R&D of mobile satellite communications [2] and satellite navigation/positioning technology. The on board equipments were developed by the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) and the National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT). A precise time and frequency management technology is essential to realize a satellite navigation system. NICT, therefore, is conducting the precise time and frequency transfer experiment between the cesium atomic clock on ETS-VIII and the ground reference clock. For this experiment, a special time transfer system, which was proposed by NICT, was developed. We adopt a two-way time transfer method making use of the carrier phase information for the precise timing measurement. We expect to attain a precision of few ps on the measurement of the time difference between on board standards and the ground reference clocks. We are beginning precise time transfer experiment using ETS-VIII.
