Abstract: | This paper introduces the MARUSE project and places particular focus on the final demonstration in Scotland that will demonstrate key Galileo differentiators through the use of Galileo pseudolites. MARUSE is a 6th Framework project of the Galileo Joint Undertaking (GJU) / European GNSS Supervisory Authority (GSA) and aims to bring together small to medium enterprises (SME’s), maritime GNSS industry, other GNSS industry, key service providers and users within the maritime domain. The project defines Galileo and EGNOS differentiators and identifies areas where these can help expedite the use of Galileo and EGNOS in marine operations; including new maritime user equipment, high accuracy systems, port and harbour manoeuvres, inland waterways operations and related port logistics. The MARUSE project will culminate in a series of public demonstrations to highlight these Galileo & EGNOS differentiators. Demonstrations will be held throughout 2007 and early 2008, at various locations within Europe. This paper will introduce the final demonstration focussing on port and harbour approach applications, which is hosted by the General Lighthouse Authorities of the United Kingdom and Ireland and will be held in Oban, (Scotland). This demonstration will focus on port and harbour approach applications and will consist of vessels completing maritime applications using improved accuracy and availability provided by Galileo pseudolites broadcasting on the E5 frequency. This paper will introduce these new Galileo pseudolites and detail their operational capabilities and how they are to be used as an integral part of this demonstration. This will be the first time that Galileo-like signals will be used for navigation in the British Isles and will enable the demonstration to show the true benefits of Galileo. |
