Achieving the Centimeter Level of Accuracy in Urban Canyons Using LocataLites

J-P. Montillet

Abstract: The UK Department for Trade and Industry (DTI) has recently funded a project called Visualising Integrated Information on Buried Assets to Reduce Streetworks to first map precisely buried assets (gas pipes, telecom cables, etc), and secondly to increase the efficiency of the process in challenging environments such as in urban canyons where GPS is either not accurate, reliable enough or even available. In this context, the author went to Australia for training on LOCATA technology at the University of New South of Wales, and during his stay he made a number of measurements in urban canyons scenario. This technology is developed by LOCATA Corporation Pty Ltd. All in all, the technology shows promising results. The accuracy is similar to Real Time Kinematics (RTK) -GPS at all points monitored in the yard. Moreover, we underline in this paper the reliability and the flexibility of this new technology compared with RTK -GPS.
