Abstract: | The present paper describes a detailed numerical simulation study of indoor propagation carried out in order to evaluate multipath effects on the GNSS repeater based indoor positioning approach. Studies have already been carried out on this approach [1] (in 2D and 3D, for static or dynamic configurations) but until now multipath effects were not separately considered and analyzed. The goal of the present paper is to provide the required complementary information to this indoor localization technique and to achieve a better understanding of indoor multipath propagation. A simulation software, Ergospace, is used in order to simulate the propagation between the transmitter antennas and the receiving antenna. The simulated paths are set as inputs for a GPS receiver simulator. Direct comparison between simulation results at the output of the simulated receiver and predicted data will be presented and discussed before concluding. The paper is organized as follows: the first section outlines the theory of the GNSS repeater based approach. Ergospace, the propagation simulation software used, is described in the second section. The use of the two modules (Outdoor and Indoor) will be detailed, together with the description of the input and output data of the software. The goal of this part is to determine and characterize multipath propagation in a given indoor environment. The Ergospace simulator outputs a file containing the estimates of the multipath parameters values (power level, propagation delay and carrier phase). This file is used as input for the GPS receiver simulator described in section 3. The GPS receiver simulator, implemented using MatLab-Simulink, is used in order to estimate the error caused by the multipath. Section 4 presents the numerical results. First, the indoor environment characterization is presented, and then the antennas used as transmitters and receivers are presented and characterized. Finally, results will be presented and discussed, and comparisons between simulated and real data will be performed, before concluding. |
