Reproducing an Aircraft Flight

Tanuj Oruganti and Jonathan Hill

Abstract: This paper outlines research into autopilot technology, where the current goal is to use a flight simulation package to reproduce the flight of an actual remote controlled aircraft. In this research, an embedded microprocessor collected sensor and control surface data from a SIG Kadet remote controlled aircraft. The sensors include a Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver and an inertial measurement unit. The microprocessor used was a soft-core processor in an FPGA. The acquisition and field adjustment was performed using a custom ā€˜Cā€™ application. The flight reproduction involved processing and the use of an open source flight simulator. Using data in this way provides opportunities to study aircraft dynamics.
