A Passive Regional Hybrid Positioning System: TGSNS/Barometer

R. Li, Y. Wang

Abstract: China has built a regional satellite system, so called Beidou Double-star positioning system. This system can service for positioning, communication and timing. But because active positioning method is employed in this system, user number, positioning accuracy and frequency are limited; and receivers have to be exposed with high risk and are not able to provide speed data. For the above shortcomings, based on the current constellation, the paper advises that the backup satellite should be employed to build a Three-GEO-Satellite Navigation System, which is, shortly called TGSNS here. An integrated TGSNS/Barometer navigation system is introduced to make it possible to position passively with just three GEO satellites. The principle of the hybrid system is presented in the paper. Three precise pseuranges from GEO satellites and height data from barometer are combined with Kalman algorithm to accomplish the positioning. Considering ranging error with different weights, the paper analyzes the geometry factor in hybrid system. The feasibility of this combined method is proved by real static and dynamic experiment data. From the result, some conclusions can be reached. The whole positioning error of TGSNS/Barometer is affected mainly by the error from north direction. Horizontal error is increasing with the decreasing of user’s latitude. In addition, ranging error of height contributes more to north positioning error.
