An Efficient New Method of Doppler Removal and Correlation with Application to Software-Based GNSS Receivers

M.G. Petovello, G. Lachapelle

Abstract: This paper presents an efficient new method for performing the Doppler removal and correlation in a software-based GNSS receiver. The method differs from existing methods in that it performs the Doppler removal for all satellites simultaneously, thus eliminating a large number of computations. The major benefit of this approach is that it is implementation agnostic, and further improvements could be realized using previously developed strategies to improve efficiency. Results from simulations and from real data show that the new method yields results similar to more traditional methods, but is considerably more efficient. Using 20 MHz quadrature samples, the new method was found to be approximately 25 % faster than the 2nd fastest method.
