On the Multifractal Nature of Pseudorange Local Errors

M. van den Bossche

Abstract: In the navigation systems under current development, the multipath error remains the dominant contributor to the ranging measurement error, and for this reason deserves a detailed level of analysis. This paper presents analyses based on the use of both GPS data from IGS networks as well as GIOVE A Galileo data from the GSTB-v2 network. A typology of the various behaviors of observed multipath errors is presented, based on results of autocorrelation, frequency spectrum and scaling exponents analyses. An attempt at tracing the behaviors to the measurement conditions is proposed. The synthesis of these considerations indicate that the true nature of the multipath error is multifractal.
