Next-Generation of Handheld GPS Products Will Require Next-Generation Displays

Glen G. Kephart

Abstract: Widespread acceptance of ultra-portable Global Positioning System (GPS) products will become a reality with the introduction of full function micro displays that will enable a whole new class of low cost, high resolution, handheld GPS products small enough to fit into a jacket or shirt pocket. Today’s displays do not fulfill consumer demand for increased information capabilities, and the text and image data they can present is often difficult to read – not nearly as crisp and clear as the images consumers are used to seeing on a desktop monitor or notebook PC. Additionally, portable GPS devices for use by hikers or recreational sailors have traditionally been too cumbersome and the power demands for the display have meant annoying, and sometimes critical battery drains. This presentation will show how a new generation of information displays will provide a solution to this problem. Now, GPS manufacturers can employ lightweight, power efficient, 0.24-inch diagonal active matrix liquid crystal displays (AMLCD) in their new devices. These “virtual” displays provide a full screen of detailed, high-resolution maps or text in 16.7 million colors. By using a magnifying lens, the user sees an optical image equivalent to a five-inch diagonal direct view display that can be viewed in all sorts of lighting conditions including bright sunlight. Objectives: To show how new display technology will significantly change the future of GPS. Results: Hand-held GPS portable devices that can be used conveniently by hikers, sailors and others. Conclusions: These ultra-portable GPS devices will bring the industry a new generation of products. Significance: Because of these low-cost, energy-efficient displays, ultra-portable hand-held GPS devices will become a popular option for GPS manufacturers and open significant new markets for these companies.
