Real-time Ionospheric and Atmospheric Corrections for Wide Area Single Frequency Carrier Phase Ambiguity Resolution

Abstract: We have developed software to generate corrections that allow single frequency carrier phase ambiguity resolution over 200 km baselines with 10 minutes of data or less. The correction data stream is designed to enable real-time survey quality positioning with low-cost single frequency hardware at a distance of up to 200 km from a reference station. Successful ambiguity resolution is required to obtain survey quality positions with short data sets. To achieve ambiguity resolution with single frequency data over large distances of 100-200 km reference data and correction information have to be provided: (1) precise satellite orbit and clock information, (2) tropospheric delay corrections, (3) ionospheric corrections. Reference site data are needed so that the client software can form double differences for carrier phase ambiguity resolution. We are transmitting these data in standard RTCM 3.0 format. For the precise orbits and clocks we use predicted GPS orbits from the IGS (so-called IGU orbits). This paper describes the system that we developed with emphasis on the atmospheric corrections (2) and (3) and it will discuss the feasibility and reliability of using low-cost L1 equipment for surveying.
