Abstract: In this paper, a trade-off analysis of code acquisition techniques for Galileo Safety of Life receivers is presented. This analysis includes the standard Matched Filter, Delay and Multiply, Parallel Code Phase Search with FFT and Parallel Frequency Offset Search with FFT techniques. A variation of the later, less sensitive to carrier Doppler, was also developed and analysed. Each technique’s sensitivity is statistically characterised, the number of operations required to perform a full sweep of a predefined search grid is quantified, and Doppler robustness is evaluated. Furthermore, three result combination methods, which enable a sensitivity increase of the acquisition techniques, are analysed in terms of their gain and Doppler robustness: the Coherent Integration, the Non-Coherent Combination of Squared Coherent Integrations and the Non-Coherent Combination of the Magnitude of Coherent Integrations.
