Abstract: | To avoid further cost explosions in the defense industry, future acquisitions will need far greater flexibility than present systems provide. The most glaring limitations can be traced to data interfaces; as one example, standard nav outputs are limited to display data content and quality. Without major rework (e.g., running extra wires), then, sacrifices are experienced in performing various functions involving that data. Incredible as it may seem, the deficiency extends to navigation itself (e.g., when only a partial fix can be made) but more subtly, to several additional operations discussed herein. After limited discussion of representative examples, underlying causes are briefly reviewed. |
