Abstract: | "The first autonomous vehicle race organized by DARPA took place in the Mojave Desert on the 13th of March, 2004. The much-anticipated event was intended to accelerate the development of autonomous vehicle technology. Although none of the contenders completed even 10% of the about 143 miles between Barstow California and Primm Nevada, the race was considered a big success. The organizers provided waypoints only two hours prior to race and the route was planned 95% offroad. This presented a formidable challenge for the mapping support as it left virtually no time for route preprocessing. This paper gives an overview of the effort and discusses some aspects of the mapping component that supported the TerraMax Team, including the use of publicly available terrain data and orthoimagery, dedicated surveys, and real-time mobile mapping.
