Abstract: The new European satellite navigation system, Galileo, employs a number of new signal features. These include Binary Offset Carrier (BOC) modulation, pilot signals, very long codes with tiered structures and convolutional data encoding. GPS is also being augmented with new signals that incorporate some of these features. Different techniques are available to process these signals A team comprising Raytheon Systems Ltd, The CAA Institute of Satellite Navigation at the University of Leeds and Roke Manor Research have developed a highlyconfigurable receiver designed to operate on any signal currently proposed, or likely to be proposed, for Galileo and the GPS modernisation. This work was jointly funded by the British National Space Centre S@TCOM programme and Raytheon Systems Limited. The overarching requirements for this development were to achieve high configurability, extremely low implementation losses and high sensitivity, whilst providing the end user with the highest possible measurement accuracy. The receiver development targeted high integrity operations such as deployment in ground reference stations and aviation. The receiver is to be used as the pre-launch test receiver for the navigation signal generator of the GSTB-V2/A satellite signal provided by Surrey Satellite Technology Ltd. This paper presents signal processing algorithms employed in the receiver for the acquisition and tracking of the new the GPS and Galileo signals. It also discusses a wide-ranging development campaign which has resulted in an optimised acquisition and tracking architecture for the Galileo L1 and E5 signals. Although not implemented at this stage in the receiver, E6 is also fully-supported within the framework architecture.
