Abstract: | The objective of the Wide Area Augmentation System (WAAS) is to enhance the GPS standard positioning service providing sufficient integrity, accuracy, availability and continuity for use in commercial aviation. The FAA commissioned the WAAS system for operational use on July 10, 2003. The system provides en-route through non-precision approach and LNAV/VNAV as well as LPV approach capabilities. WAAS is the first Satellite Based Augmentation System (SBAS) system certified for use in commercial aviation. WAAS has been in continuous operation since commissioning. In parallel, the FAA and Raytheon are currently developing overall performance improvements that led to the Full Operational Capability (FOC) by expanding WAAS into Canada and Mexico and providing improved accuracy, continuity and availability for users. This paper will identify the expected performance improvements in terms of enhanced accuracy, continuity and availability over the United States of America. This paper will present actual WAAS performance information and describe the actual changes being made to the WAAS ground and space components for FOC. The expected performance improvements will be analyzed using real data taken from the operational WAAS system and applying this data to the improved and expanded FOC algorithms. Availability performance predictions will be provided using the FOC algorithms and applying them to the new WAAS Reference Station sites. |
