The European GNSS L5/E5 Interference Environment and the Performance of Pulsed Interference Mitigation Techniques

Abstract: The reception of Galileo E5 and GPS L5 signals at high altitude is degraded due to pulsed interference originating from other services utilising the Aeronautical Radionavigation Services (ARNS) frequency band. The interference caused by high power pulsed signals from Distance Measuring Equipment (DME) and Tactical Air Navigation (TACAN) ground transponders can be mitigated using simple amplitude domain filtering. The degradation of GNSS reception, and therefore GNSS compatibility with aviation user requirements, is highly dependent upon receiver inference mitigation architecture and the true interference environment. Amplitude and pulse repetition frequency data has been recovered from raw analogue to digital samples obtained during flight trials over Europe. Trials data has been used to calibrate an RF interference model for European airspace. The recovered pulse environment from the flight trials has been injected into a simulation of a GNSS receiver’s code and carrier tracking functions. A digital pulse-blanking architecture was found to result in a small degradation in GNSS reception. The calibration, with supporting evidence from the pulseblanking simulation, has resulted in a substantial reduction in the predicted degradation in the reception of L5/E5a and E5b GNSS signal reception.
