Avionics Education and Research at Ohio University

Michael S. Braasch and Frank van Graas

Abstract: The Avionics Engineering Center (AEC) at Ohio University was founded in 1963. Over the past four decades, the AEC has been involved in a wide variety of communication, navigation and surveillance research. Under the auspices of the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, faculty researchers have also developed and taught numerous related courses both at the undergraduate and graduate level. In addition, both undergraduate and graduate student interns at the AEC have had the opportunity to take an active role in the research and thus take the concepts out of the classroom and put them into practice. This paper will describe the educational opportunities Ohio University provides for students in the classroom, laboratory and in the field. Ohio University prides itself on the ability to teach the theoretical background of navigation, provide the .ground. laboratory facilities necessary to build a given project, and then take the project to the .flying. laboratories (i.e., research aircraft) needed for test and evaluation.
