Abstract: | The Geodetic and Geoinformation Science (GGS) program at the Ohio State University (OSU) has more than 50-year tradition of excellence in both research and education in Geodetic Science and Geomatics Engineering, including Geodesy, Photogrammetry, Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Remote Sensing. The program has a long tradition in promoting and leading advanced research in several areas of Geodetic Science and related fields, including the use of Global Positioning System (GPS) satellites in engineering and scientific applications, such as airborne gravity measurement using GPS and INS (inertial navigation system), GPS-buoy sea level monitoring, longrange kinematic GPS, and GPS/INS integration for airborne and land based mobile mapping; maintenance and realization of the terrestrial reference frame, the study of Earth system dynamics and its role in the global climate change; precision orbit determination, space applications, LIDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) and SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar) applications, instrument calibration/verification for altimetry satellites and their applications, such as determination of global sea level variations; theory and techniques for geodetic adjustment and mathematical representations of physical properties; image interpretation, imaging system modeling and calibration, etc. Synergistic cooperation between the Geodetic Science faculty and faculty and research staff across the OSU campus, as well as strong ties to government agencies and industry, provide a rich environment for any interdisciplinary research involving highprecision navigation and spatial data acquisition and processing, as well as successful technology transfer, by implementing research results into real life applications. This paper presents an overview of the undergraduate and graduate programs and the mainstream research conducted in GGS at OSU. |
