A Block Processing Carrier to Noise Ratio Estimator for the Global Positioning System

Michelle Sayre

Abstract: An existing carrier to noise ratio, C/No, estimator accumulates wide and narrow band powers to determine C/No. This estimator is biased by approximately –0.22 dB-Hz and has noise better than 0.5 dB-Hz (95%) for C/No’s between 40 and 56 dB-Hz averaged over 1 s. In this paper, a block processing C/No estimator that maximizes the observability of the C/No using frequency domain techniques is developed. The block processing C/No estimator is unbiased and has noise below 0.09 dBHz (95%) for C/No’s between 40 and 56 dB-Hz averaged over 1 s.
