Performance of a Tomographic Approach to SBAS Ionospheric Estimation in the Equatorial Region

Roland Lejeune, and M. Bakry El-Arini

Abstract: This paper examines whether a Satellite-Based Augmentation System (SBAS) using ionospheric tomography for estimating ionospheric delays and associated error bounds could provide a much better service to single-frequency users in the equatorial region (e.g., Brazil) than an SBAS relying on the current, thin shell model approach. provide some insight into the performance improvements that could be expected in the equatorial area from moving toward a tomographic solution, and also, into the difficulties that such a solution might present when used to implement the ionospheric function of an SBAS.
