Abstract: High accuracy positioning services named PAS based on networked RTK-GPS and FKP method, has been realized in Japan, and commercially operated by Mitsubishi Electric Corporation since September 2003. PAS service is delivered through cellular phone network in urban or suburban area at present, and cm-level accuracy for survey and mapping is obtained in wide area covering Tokyo, Osaka and Nagoya. The working area in survey and mapping is however extended beyond the urban area, and it is sometimes difficult to connect cellular phone in rural or mountain area, which covers mote than 70% of national land. Therefore it has been a subject for us to develop a new method actual available to deliver PAS service to such an area easily and at low cost. We have shown promising experimental result by satellite cellular packet, as well as terrestrial broadcasting, which will make it possible to expand our service to whole national land commercially. Application to human navigation in urban area is also shown using cellular phone with real image, and verified quite available in our domestic demonstration. This human navigation system will be linked to PAS system near future to be served as location base services (LBS). It is well known that GPS navigation in urban area is frequently disturbed by signal occultation by buildings, which is known as “Urban canyon problem”, and a new method available even at indoor navigation has been a major concern in LBS. Here we have shown our trade-off study on a several candidates considering accuracy, quality and messaging feasibility.
