Abstract: | A flexible, real-time software based advanced GPS signal simulator for simulation of complex situations is described. It consists of various doctrinally correct software elements describing the SV's, the Rx conditions, and the environment. The software blocks are organized in a multiprocessor configuration enabling real-time generation of baseband samples. The baseband signal is then upconverted to provide live RF signals. This approach allows the flexibility and fidelity of software modules to be used for real-time signal simulation. This also allows simulation of GNSS signals and their wave fronts at several receiver locations and under diverse conditions. Precise phase relationships between L1 and L2 carrier frequencies and their codes are maintained throughout the wavefront and the system can be used to simulate conditions which are difficult or impossible using conventional simulators. Some of these involve propagation conditions (scintillation, fading, atmospheric and plasma effects, partial obscuration, multipath and scattering etc.), receiver and jammer dynamics and maneuvers, and so on. Such a system can be used for development, testing and evaluating new GPS and Galileo receivers under diverse conditions. Software based architecture will allow easy addition of future civilian and military waveforms (L5 and Lm) and other niche applications. The simulator will also have the capability to emulate the signals from WAAS, LAAS, DGPS and JPALS, which will create a comprehensive test bed for developing and testing of sophisticated navigational systems. Such a system will be valuable in the design and development of advanced GPS and Galileo receivers for INS/GPS integration, RTK processing, scintillation measurement and mitigation and many other applications relying on signal carrier phase. |
