Abstract: System simulation is a widespread technique to develop and test system architecture, performance and reliability of complex frameworks like a GNSS system. In the last few years a number of GNSS simulators were developed by different institutes and companies. All of these simulators cover only sub-areas of GNSS systems. Therefore within the framework of the BaiCES project, a new satellite navigation simulator was developed, in cooperation of EADS Astrium, IfEN and the University FAF Munich. The main goal of this development was to combine the existing simulators of the three project partners with their individual advantages to one unique GNSS system simulator, covering all sub-areas of a GNSS system with respect to the whole system. The resulting simulator is capable of performing both end-to-end and service volume simulations. The simulator is based on a commercial simulation kernel and environment. It provides a universal simulation kernel, scheduling, dataflow handler, graphical development platform and others. It furthermore already includes a variety of pre-defined models for many simple and generic tasks. Own models for specific tasks can be easily added and combined to own libraries. The three project partners already own a various set of simulation models, resulting from their previous work and projects on GNSS simulation. These existing models, and also newly developed models, were adapted to the simulation kernel and to each other's interfaces, in order to facilitate the combination of all the models. A simulation case can be composed graphically by drag and drop of the models from the model library into the simulation window, connecting the input and output ports and setting model parameters. In the second part of the paper, some example simulation applications and their emphasis will be presented. These range from a simple single-user positioning to a complex scenario with orbit and integrity determination.
