Galileo User Segment Overview

M. Hollreiser, P. Erhard, P. Lorenzi, C.S. Dixon

Abstract: The paper addresses the Test User Segment of the Galileo Satellite Navigation System. This segment comprises the receiver units, which will receive and process the Galileo Signals-In-Space and provide navigation and other information to the Galileo Users. They will support system validation as well as signal experimentation. The concept of Test User Receivers is explained, highlighting the difference between Test Receivers and Commercial Receivers. The paper provides an outline of the high-level requirements for the Test User Segment. Functional and performance requirements are presented, and operational environment issues discussed. The interfaces between the User Segment and the Galileo System are summarized, in particular the signals in space of the Galileo System. The key differences between Galileo and GPS receivers are identified, explained, and discussed. The potential for combined Galileo + GPS operation for certain market segments is assessed. The benefits and the costs of operation of a combined system receiver are discussed.
