Abstract: | Future designers and users of the new military M code need quick analysis techniques that are accurate but simple to predict the performance characteristics of the numerous signal conditions and tracking modes of M code receivers. This paper describes rule-of-thumb code and carrier tracking loop threshold determination techniques. These techniques permit simple spreadsheet analysis of the performance of the numerous modes and architectures available for the new M code GPS receivers in the presence of dynamic stress and radio frequency interference (RFI). Essential to these performance analyses are the tracking loop filter noise bandwidth, the carrier-to-noise power ratio and the predetection integration time. These parameters are described and the reader is provided insight into their determination for a given M code architecture. First, the various tracking modes of the new M code signal are described and typical receiver baseband architectures are described. Then examples of the code delay lock loop (DLL), the carrier frequency lock loop (FLL) and phase lock loop (PLL) tracking threshold analysis techniques are analyzed. Approximation equations for tracking loop jitter are utilized in the analysis. The sound basis for maximum jitter tolerance is described for the rule-of-thumb tracking threshold for each type of tracking loop (DLL, FLL and PLL). Finally, the analyzed tracking thresholds are used to estimate the receiver performance in the presence of RFI. |
