A Method for Repeater Position Determination in the Wireless Location

Abstract: In wireless communication network repeaters are widely deployed in dense urban area, for example in Seoul, Korea, to increase communication coverage of mobile phone and to provide better quality of communication service. Often the exact geographical locations of the deployed repeaters are not available. From the point of wireless location, these repeaters cause problem. If communication network signal is transmitted to a mobile phone through a repeater rather than directly from the base station (BS) and the mobile station (MS) dose not know this happens, the corresponding range measurement from this signal propagation has a large error due to the incorrect transmitter almanac. In this paper, we present a method for repeater position determination and range error compensation using LS (Least Square) and DSM (Direct Solution Method) when GPS mobile phones within the same area can acquire GPS (Global Positioning System) signal.
