Abstract: This paper describes the "Multifunction GPS Sensor for vehicle monitoring (JRN-30 Mobile Locator)". The JRN-30 Mobile Locator is a position information communication terminal for use in LBS (Location Based Service) such as, for example, vehicle theft prevention, dynamic vehicle fleet operation management. We have developed a compact and lightweight terminal consisting of a 16-channel GPS receiver with built-in high-speed search logic that is combined with a PDC-P (Personal Digital Cellular Packet) communication module. This terminal is able to transmit the GPS-based longitude/latitude and speed data, the serial data from DTE (Data Terminal Equipment) and the external sensor information via a packet communications network such as the DoPa (DoCoMo Packet) network. In addition, the terminal incorporate a diversity of functions including protocol conversion, external port control, a built-in battery and GPS time-synchronized data logging. The terminal with these functions is available for various applications.
