Abstract: | The EGNOS system is being developed in Europe to provide GPS and GLONASS regional augmentation services to aviation, maritime and land users. EGNOS is a major element of the European Satellite Navigation Programme, which is jointly being implemented by the Commission of the European Union, the European Space Agency and EUROCONTROL. EGNOS will provide the following services: GEO-based GPS-like ranging signal (R-GEO) to improve the availability and continuity of GPS position fix and RAIM over the geostationary broadcast area, GNSS Integrity Channel (GIC) to improve the integrity of GPS and GLONASS-based navigation and position determination for safety critical applications, and Wide Area Differential corrections (WAD) to improve accuracy of GPS-SPS and GLONASS. In the frame of the EGNOS design phase carried out by an industrial consortium led by Thomson-CSF under ESA contract, several experiments have already been performed in order to support : l the analysis and trade-off of different system options, l the verification of the principles and assumptions for allocation of system requirements, 0 the investigation of critical areas. These Early Trials were dedicated to most of the key issues in the system design: l verification of GPS/GLONASS user range error and position error models, l evaluation of the algorithms for satellite orbits and clocks determination for Wide Area Differential systems, l evaluation of clock synchronisation techniques, l evaluation of GNSSl receiver techniques for multipath and RF interference mitigation, l evaluation of dual and single frequency ionospheric delay estimation techniques, l evaluation of GPS/GLONASS coordinate reference system transformation methods. Those tests were started in the frame of the EGNOS phase B activities beginning of 1996, and are presently almost finished. This paper provides an overview of these above experiments and the major results obtained, evidencing the relations with the system design. |
