Abstract: | Loran c navigation has witnessed an explosive expansion during the past ten years due to its acceptance into the general aviation arena. This widely accepted and increased interest has placed many demands on not only manufacturers but federal and state government as well. Capabilities of the Loran C navigation have been demonstrated to provide both accuracy and reliability in both en route and approach modes. The low cost and ease of operation have naturally been a major reason for its popularity, and thus it is estimated that over 60,000 units are in the general aviation fleet today. The Loran C has made it possible to increase our national system utilization through direct routing, increase existing airport access, and utilize hundreds of airports not now capable of accommodating instrument operations. The tremendous potential as well as technological capability is here today. The federal and state governments, through the FAA and NASA0 partnership, must be prepared to accept and address the demands and challenges being placed on our doorsteps in order to accelerate the implementation of the Loran navigation and approach procedures and to be prepared for the next generation of Loran/GPS which is now straining at the harness just waiting to be released. |
