Abstract: | The Omega user community includes a large number of meterological observation stations taking twice daily balloon measurements of the upper air wind profiles from the ground up to 30 km of altitude. These data are a major factor in weather forecasting, serving both shipping and aviation. Many of these stations provide data from relatively inaccessible locations. Shipboard observations have a special role in covering the all-important ocean areas. This paper reviews the extent of use of the Omega system for this application, as well as the resulting benefits to the transportation industry. |
