Operational And Economic Benefits Of Area Navigation From The Perspective Of A Major Air Carrier

J. Michael Frank

Abstract: Compared to todays 11station-referenced11 system of navigation, area navigation systems have the potential to save the airlines millions of dollars in fuel each year. But more than that, they also offer the opportunity for the air carriers to more efficiently utilize crews and aircraft, and reduce delays and increase the efficiency of the airspace system, especially over water. RNAV procedures can reduce controller workload, increase traffic flows and can benefit all segments of aviation, that is general aviation, and business aviation as well as the airlines.
